Looking Back at Subway’s® Story

The first Subway® was introduced in the market 50 years ago, bearing the idea of operating a submarine sandwich shop. This concept changed the life of the then-college student, Fred DeLuca. It was all thanks to Nuclear Physicist Dr. Peter Buck, who conceptualized the business model and urged DeLuca to run it so he could pay for his tuition. 

Today, we are one of the world’s largest submarine sandwich chains with more than 40,000 locations around the world. We have become the leading choice for people seeking quick, nutritious meals that the whole family can enjoy. From the beginning, Fred has had a clear vision for the future of the Subway® brand. As we continue to grow, we are guided by his passion for delighting customers by serving delicious, made-to-order sandwiches.

Become the Boss - Paula Viray

Paula was once a former employee of a Subway® operator in Singapore as a senior sandwich artist, and in the Philippines as the in-charge of the catering/delivery department.

While working, she dreamed of having her Subway® restaurant, and in due time, she successfully realized and franchised the business.

Today, Viray believes that it is rewarding to own a Subway®, given her experience in the company. Her knowledge when it comes to the day-to-day operation of the business helps her manage the franchise well.

Yet, as abrupt economic changes happen at times, Viray shares that this is one of the most challenging factors in operating Subway® in Manila. She needs to control and maintain the average food and store costs despite the rising prices of commodities in the market.

Paula is the face of empowered women who believes that everything is possible if you stay optimistic in life. Working overseas and leaving her son for a while taught her to become resilient at all times.

She starts to dream about something big and look at what she has achieved now! She’s one proud Subway® franchise owner already!

From Banker to Franchise Owner - Luona Wang

As a former credit card analyst at Hongkong Shanghai Banking Corporation (HSBC), Luona has started to shift from being a banker and a housewife to becoming an empowered Subway® franchise owner.

Having a big family, she started to search for business opportunities that could support her family by providing additional income to their household. She thought that unlike other quick-service restaurants (QSR), Subway® has a capital requirement that was lower compared to others.

Moreover, she believed that Subway® is the leading brand in QSR with food concepts, and operations standards would help her become a successful owner.

Today, Luona is an entrepreneur who enjoys financial independence as a Subway® franchise owner. She thinks that managing and maintaining a motivated team of individuals to run the business is tough, but she dares to withstand this challenge. In fact, she is planning to open five more Subway® branches in the next few years in Manila and Bonifacio Global City (BGC).
